Make location part of the case

Answer the questions distance creates.

A Perth or regional WA business should not be marketed as though geography is irrelevant. Strong presentation explains why the location supports the opportunity and how an interstate buyer can operate, manage or integrate it.

Explain the Western Australian demand drivers

Show which local industries, population centres, projects or customer needs support revenue. Distinguish durable demand from a temporary spike. Where mining, resources, construction, defence, tourism or government activity matters, connect the business to actual customers and capabilities rather than broad claims about the WA economy.

Define the logical buyer groups

An interstate buyer may be a strategic operator seeking WA capability, a supplier or customer pursuing vertical integration, a competitor expanding geographically, or an individual relocating for the right business. Each group needs a different explanation of value, synergies, management and capital requirements.

Make management and transition practical

Clarify whether the business can be managed locally, what the current owner does, who holds key relationships and what support is available after settlement. If relocation is required, say so early. If the business can operate under retained management, provide evidence of role clarity and capability.

Present logistics, premises and licences clearly

Interstate buyers may be unfamiliar with WA freight, labour availability, regional travel, lease conditions, state licences or local procurement. Explain the operating footprint, major dependencies, lead times and transfer requirements in plain language.

Use evidence that travels

High-quality financial information, customer and supplier profiles, process documentation, management structure, asset schedules and suitable video or virtual inspections help qualified buyers assess the opportunity before committing to travel. Sensitive material should still be released in controlled stages.

Positioning question: Why is this business strategically useful to someone outside WA, and what would make ownership from another state commercially and operationally workable?

National reach still needs local leadership.

Interstate engagement works best when national buyer access is combined with someone who understands the local business, its market and the practical details buyers will test. Barry leads FINN’s official WA branch and works nationally as an M&A Partner, giving suitable WA opportunities a direct local point of contact with broader buyer reach.
